The Miato region is a region of the Pokémon world and (quite obviously) the setting of Project Miato.

Geography and climate

Spanning two major landmasses and various small islands scattered around them, Miato is very climatically diverse - From the icy Northern Tundra through the pleasant highlands and temperate climes of the more central areas, tranquil forests, mountain passes laden with snow, deep caverns, valleys of mineral-rich azure rocks, the great Jeweled Desert with its many secrets and richly-grown rainforest islands are only some of the landscapes and biomes one may find here.

The majority of the northern landmass is a climatically temperate area framed by two long ridges of mountains - Tiger's Eye Ridge to the west and Azure Ridge stretching over to the east. Tiger's Eye Ridge's terrain is generally earth-toned (with some of the mountains brighter than others), whereas special mineral sediments within the rocks of Azure Ridge (and the valley it frames, commonly known as Azure Valley) give the rocks a strange, blue, crystalline tint. The two ridges meet at Hawk's Eye Pass, creating an interesting geological formation of blending minerals. The pass is the only relatively safe path beyond the ridges and into the harsh, frozen Northern Tundra beyond.

Dominating the peaceful northeast of Miato are highlands that slope down gradually into plains. Occasional little streams and ponds, rock formations and small forests dot the landscape, leading eventually to the great Quartz Forest, spanning a wide area of the northern landmass. Eventually the trees thin out to reveal the coastal plains dominating the southern edge of the northern landmass. There one may also find pathways leading into intricate cave systems underneath Azure Ridge and, through them, into Azure Valley proper. On the Southeastern part of the Northern Continent, separated from the majority of the continent by mountains is a single, particularly tall mountain that has come to be known as Mount Triumph. A long and winding path climbing up - and on occasionally through - the mountain leads up to the Miato Pokémon League, ever-awaiting challengers.

The southern landmass of Miato is smaller and is dominated by the tall, snow-covered Obsidian Ridge and the vast Jeweled Desert that exists within its rain shadow. A broad, rocky coastal area dominates the east of this region, climbing up into the mountains. A mountain pass (known as Drake's Pass on account of numerous wild Cindrake sightings in the area) trails through a small valley going through the ridge - at places, the walls of the ridge will tower on both sides as if you were walking through the bottom of a ravine. Eventually the pass opens up to the edge of the Jeweled Desert. To the east flows the Beryl River - a deep river known for its treacherous currents, originating in the wide, glacial Beryl Lake. The Beryl River Valley is a green oasis in the midst of the Jeweled Desert, and runs to the southeast of the landmass - where it splits into a wide delta and flow out into the ocean.

Miato is also surrounded by the Outlying Islands, leading away towards other region. One of the most major islands is a large Rainforest Island left for the most part untouched by human hands.

Biogeography

The Miato region's great diversity provides a home for many different species of Pokémon and plants. Some of these are unique to Miato, whereas others may be found - with varying degrees of abundance - in other regions. Miato provides a comfortable breeding grounds for species that are considered rare or even nearly extinct in other regions of the world - for example, Eevees are a rather common sight in a few routes and pods of Lapras roam the icy northern oceans freely.

Miato's soil contains trace amounts of certain minerals that give much plantlife in the region a slight bluish tint in comparison. These minerals are the primary component of Azure Ridge's rocks and Azure Valley's soil - and prolonged exposure to these minerals in the relatively isolated biome of Azure Valley has led to the evolution of Pokémon species which incorporated these minerals into themselves - becoming Crystal-type Pokémon.

People and history

In ancient times, the Miato region was home to an ancient civilization that, through living in harmony with Pokémon, reached unparalleled levels of advancement. The people of this civilization disappeared many aeons ago, but their impact upon the Miato region can still be felt to this very day. Ancient monuments dot the Miato region - some that have fallen into ruin and disarray and some that still function well beyond the disappearance of their creators. The greatest of these are the four Guardians - enormous, quasi-living mechanical monuments of unknown purpose which may have a part to play in the control and regulation of an entire network of ancient machinery - machinery that may have a profound effect on the entire region.

The first human settlers in the region in the modern era were thinkers and scholars who were weary of strife and conflict erupting around them and sought to find a place where they could live in at least some semblance of peace and harmony and share their ideas and theories with each other freely and respectfully. In time, the region became a haven for free thinkers, artists and other like-minded individuals. The People of Miato have a deep respect for the balance, science, creativity and accessibility of information and knowledge to the masses, allowing advancements in technology to be readily available for the masses, all the while making sure that balance is preserved. As such, Miato's technology is somewhat more advanced than most of the rest of the world and routes are build to interfere as little as possible with nature. Miato's towns and cities are all named after minerals.

Miato's native people are also distinguished by a soft accent, vaguely reminiscent of what an Earth human would call a British accent - though sub-regional variations exist.

Miato Pokémon League

The Miato League - like all other Pokémon Leagues - requires challengers to prove their worth by earning eight Gym Badges by defeating eight Gym Leaders. Trainers who have collected all these badges may approach and challenge Mount Triumph - a gauntlet of landscape, wild Pokémon and other aspiring challengers winding up to its peak - where the crystalline tower that is the palace of the elite four resides within the Pokémon League complex. Within the palace the Elite Four await, and may be battled in no particular order. Trainers who have conquered the Elite Four may then challenge the Miato League Champion for the title.

The Outlying Islands

Apart from the Rainforest Island, there are several other islands in the general area of Miato. Many of them are not significant enough to be marked on the map - although they may become the setting of a Battle Frontier expansion.
