Biology
Irisail is a large, long-bodied fish Pokémon covered in crystalline scales. Many of these scales fused to form a series of tough armor plates on its head and along its spine. Irisail has a prominent array of six long pectoral fins and a pronged caudal fin. A bright, iridescent line runs along the sides of its body, 'filtering' into the lower sides of its pectoral fins and into thin lines on its caudal fin, giving it a striking presence. The rays of its anal fin are tipped with sharp spines.
Unlike their gregarious previous form, Irisail are fairly solitary and may become rather aggressive when encountering each other. Dazzling, prismatic displays of color changing and fin flaring are an important constituent of Irisail communication and plays a part in aggression, intimidation, courtship and more. One display in particular - which netted them the description of 'Rainbow Fin' Pokémon - follows the apparent draining of the iridescence from their tail-tips and their lateral markings and its spread into their pectoral fins, fanning them out so that each fin displays a different color - a display that may be followed by a release of radiant energy in the form of a Starburst.
They are powerful swimmers and are predatory in nature, feeding on small water-type Pokémon. They spend most of their lives in the ocean, but sometimes return to the rivers where they hatched as Diamono to lay their eggs.
Name Meaning
A combination of 'Iris', the personification of the rainbow in Greek mythology, and 'sail'.
Origin of Design
Irisail is based on a variety of fish both extant and extinct, taking some influences from Betta fish as well as the Placodermi, armor-plated fish that thrived through the Devonian and Silurian periods.
Locations
Irisail may rarely be found by fishing in certain spots.
