Overview
Thought to be endemic to the Miato region, Crystal-type Pokémon are a subject of fascination among researchers of Pokémon.
First observed in the northern landmass of Miato in proximity to the Azure Ridge, and believed to have emerged as a result of Pokémon incorporating the unique minerals found therein into their bodies, Crystal-type Pokémon were a mystery wrapped in an enigma when they were first characterized. While structures incorporating gems and crystals are not altogether too uncommon among Pokémon – particularly those of the Rock type – it soon became apparent that these creatures were something else altogether, and samples taken for analysis revealed that not only they had their own unique elemental spectrum, the duality it represented seemed impossible: pure physical structures so perfectly arranged that they had profound effects on the essence extending *beyond* the physical.
As a mirror bends the light or as a prism refracts it to reveal the colours within, so too do these crystalline structures appear to interact with elemental spectra closely associated with the mind and the spirit, safely dispersing the psionic energies of Psychic-type moves and the umbral energies of Dark-type moves whilst separating the primordial energies of Dragon-type moves to their many constituent parts, blunting their impact dramatically. The qualities of these crystals can also be harnessed in an offensive manner – whether through physical contact or by imparting their properties to beams of light transmitted through their surfaces – shattering veils of shadows and illusions, revealing the reality behind them and exposing those who would hide in the spaces in between, making them particularly disruptive to Psychic, Dark and Ghost-types.
These properties, however, do not extend to all life-associated energies, nor do their disruptive properties necessarily extend in both directions. While Psychic, Dark and Dragon moves have little effect against Crystal-type structures, Ghost-type moves may diffuse through them without encountering such resistance - nor do Crystal-types have any meaningful interactions, in either direction, with Bug, Fighting or (inexplicably) Fairy-types. In addition, Plants and Grass-type Pokémon readily uptake the minerals that make up Crystal-type structures, disrupting them and resisting their effects. Ground-types and Poison-types also display a resistance to Crystal-type energies, perhaps due to being more grounded in the physical than the spiritual domain, in some form or another.
Crystal-types display an interesting duality with Steel-types, in so much that their energies are mutually disruptive to each other – just as diamond will cut steel but shatter to fragments when hit with a steel hammer. Interestingly, most of the the non-physical manifestations of the energies of both these elements appear to be associated with light – though Steel-type manifestations of light typically present in white light, while those of Crystal-types typically to present in multicolored, prismatic displays.
