Biology
Swarmidge is a tiny Bug and Dark-Type Pokémon resembling a midge. Predominantly black in color, its abdomen, limbs and antennae are covered with bristles in a black-and-white striped pattern, and the bristles on its plumose antennae fade to white towards their tips. They have a single pair of wings, the second one having been reduced to a pair of halteres that function like gyroscopes in flight.
Swarmidge live most of their lives in and around lakes – most famously, lake Askalinne – and serve as a very important part in the food web of their habitats. Hatching wingless, they spend their early lives closer to the bottom of the lakes, where they feed on organic detritus – until eventually, they develop wings and rise to the surface en masse around summertime. As they are practically defenseless, the grand majority of Swarmidge end up being prey for other Pokémon, both lake-dwelling and flying – and so they rely on sheer numbers to improve their odds of survival. The fact that mass emergences still occur despite the majority of individuals in a particular hatching not surviving for long is an indication that apparently, this strategy works out just fine for the species as a whole... and given what happens to those very few Swarmidge that do survive for long enough to evolve, is probably quite the blessing for the rest of the region.
Name Meaning
A combination of swarm and midge.
Origin of Design
Swarmidge is based on the non-biting midges of the family Chironomidae.
Locations
Swarmidges emerge in large swarms in the general vicinity of Lake Askalinne and its surrounding wetlands in the summertime and occasionally end up further afield.
