Alraunum

Biology

Alraunum is a small Grass-Type Pokémon resembling a plant with a somewhat humanoid root. The root appears to be the main body of the creature, with large, leaf-like projections emerging from its head and back and a deep purple and yellow flower projecting from the top of its head.

Alraunum are a hardy, adaptive species, easily thriving in disturbed habitats - although their favored habitats are still forest areas. They are rather inquisitive creatures and will often investigate new presences in their immediate areas in an almost completely fearless manner. Few predators dare attack them as their body produces neurotoxic alkaloids - their leaves contain the highest concentration of these alkaloids, but all their tissues contain some degree of these substances - as does their saliva, allowing them to paralyze potential foes with a Lick. Curiously, their toxic nature is not reflected in their type affinities.

Alraunum do not show a great degree of sexual dimorphism in their basic form. However, the males seem to show slightly larger development of their root segment and the females generally have slightly larger leaves - an early indication of their evolutionary divergence.

Name Meaning

A combination of Alraune (the German word for the Mandrake plant) and the genus Solanum of the Nightshade family.

Origin of Design

Alraunum are based on various plants of the Nightshade family. The somewhat humanoid appearance of its root-body is a reference to the occasional phenomenon of mandrake root bifurcation, which sometimes causes the root to appear humanoid.

Locations

Alraunum can be found in Quartz Forest and several other forested areas.
