Biology

Gnaterminus is a Bug and Dark-Type Pokémon loosely resembling a monstrous mosquito. Its body is mostly dark grey in color, with dark red highlights that glisten slightly. The head is relatively small and predominantly features a pair of large orange compound eyes, plumose antennae and a prehensile proboscis with which it pierces prey and drains its fluids. The head is connected to a large thorax with a form that loosely resembles a stylized skull, with a long abdomen tipped with an array of short tendrils - itself evoking the image of a spinal column. Rows of wicked tooth-like spines adorn the underside of the first thoracic segment, and a projection featuring another row of similar spikes just forward from the third. The first segment spikes interlock with rows of corresponding spines that run along Gnaterminus' second pair of legs (which have been modified to a pair of raptorial limbs). These spines (along, to a lesser extent, with similar projecting spines on the third pair of legs) are used in conjunction to securely grip prey and prevent it from escaping - and have a rather impressive grip (or "bite force", if you will). The top side of the thorax and the first and the lower segments of the third limb pairs are covered in a thick coat of nearly-black bristles. A structure resembling a third eye is situated on the thorax, above the head, and its purpose or anatomical function is not entirely understood though sparse accounts exist of it being used to focus and launch a beam of some sort. A single pair of translucent red wings, featuring prominent eye spots, and a single pair of halteres are present, along with a pair of structures bearing eye-spots and tendrils which may be pulled tight against the body or raised and prominently presented - probably used for display purposes.

Very very few Swarmidge survive to the point of evolution – fortunately for the rest of the Norrvaloan ecosystem. The contrast between the harmless (if perhaps irritating) Swarmidge and the solitary, voracious apex predator that is Gnaterminus is so dramatic that the two species were thought to be unrelated at first.

Name Meaning

A combination of gnat and terminus.

Origin of Design

Gnaterminus draws loose inspiration from assorted mosquitoes and biting midges, turned monstrous. The structure of its thorax and abdomen are meant to very loosely resemble a skull and a spinal column, and simultaneously reflect the general structure of an insect's head and mouthparts (with the head representing the labrum, the second pair of legs representing the mandible, the third pair representing the maxilla (including the maxillary palps) and the spiny projection on the third segment of the thorax representing the labium. In this theoretical structure the display structures represent the antennae, the lens represents an ocellum and the 'eye socket' that the first pair of limbs extends from representing a compound eye.

Locations

Wild Gnaterminus are an extremely rare sight and may appear in a variety of location in the wilds at a very low probability. For some reason, they appear to be drawn out in greater force during periods of high solar activity, when red auroras are more prevalent.
